If there’s a default yoga mat, it’s this one: 183×61cm, 6mm, TPE, two colors, pebble texture, a carry strap. It’s the spec most first-time brands order, the one that fills most Amazon search results, and the one we produce more of than anything else.
Because it’s so common, it’s also where quotes are hardest to compare. Two suppliers can both quote “6mm TPE yoga mat” at prices a dollar apart and be describing different products. This page breaks the configuration into the specs that actually differ, so you can write a brief that gets comparable quotes and a mat that matches your price point.
Prices are from our 2026 quotes, FOB Shanghai, at around 500 units.
Quick Summary
- The standard config: 183×61cm, 6mm, closed-cell TPE, double-layer two-tone, pebble or wave texture, strap included. FOB roughly $6–$9.
- Weight tells you the density. Comparable 6mm TPE mats range from about 750g to 1.2kg; heavier usually means denser and longer-lasting.
- Single-layer vs double-layer is the biggest visible variant. Double-layer two-tone is the market standard; single-layer is the budget option.
- TPE is closed-cell, light and latex-free, but grip drops when wet. It’s not a hot yoga material.
- MOQ is about 300–500 units, often per color, with sampling in 5–7 working days.
The Standard Configuration
| Spec | Standard | Common Variants |
|---|---|---|
| Size | 183×61cm (72×24in) | 173×61, 183×66, 183×68, 200×61cm |
| Thickness | 6mm ±0.3mm | 4mm, 8mm, 10mm in the same construction |
| Material | Closed-cell TPE | Higher-density “premium” TPE compounds |
| Layers | Double-layer, two colors | Single-layer, single color; three-layer with a reinforcing mesh |
| Weight | 850–950g | 750g (light) to 1.2kg (dense) |
| Texture | Pebble top, wave or diamond underside | Fine grid, smooth, custom (tooling quoted after evaluation) |
| Color | Stock two-tone combinations | Pantone-matched, marbled |
| Branding | Silk-screen logo, 1 color | Laser, 2–3 color print, alignment lines |
| Accessories | Elastic carry strap | Mesh bag, drawstring bag, matching block |
| Packaging | Polybag | Belly band, printed box |
Everything in the “Standard” column is available from stock tooling and carries the lowest MOQ. Each change in the right-hand column is possible; some add cost, some change the minimum.
The Specs That Make Two Quotes Different
Density and weight
This is the one that hides in quotes. TPE can be foamed lighter or denser, and the same 6mm thickness can weigh 750g or 1.2kg. A lighter compound is cheaper, feels softer at first and compresses faster in use; a denser one costs more, feels firmer and keeps its shape longer.
So ask for weight per mat, with a tolerance, on every quote. It’s the simplest way to see whether two “6mm TPE” quotes describe the same product. A buyer who specifies “6mm, 900g ±50g” gets comparable numbers; a buyer who specifies “6mm TPE” gets the cheapest compound each supplier has. (Some buyers also specify Shore hardness. It’s a valid measure, but weight is easier to check yourself.)
Single-layer or double-layer
| Single-layer | Double-layer two-tone | |
|---|---|---|
| Construction | One TPE sheet, one color | Two TPE layers bonded, different color each side |
| Look | Plain, budget | The familiar retail look; color shows at the edge |
| Typical FOB | $5–$7 | $6–$9 |
| Who it suits | Bulk studio supply, giveaways, entry price points | Retail, Amazon, most private label |
The double-layer mat isn’t only about color: the two-layer build is usually a little more stable and gives a choice of texture on each side. The bond between layers matters for the same reason it matters on any laminated mat; check sample edges after flexing.
Texture
Most 6mm TPE mats use a pebble or fine grid pattern on top and a wave or diamond pattern underneath for floor grip. Texture affects both how the mat feels under bare feet and how it photographs. How surface pattern relates to stability is covered in our surface texture guide.
What TPE Does Well, and What It Doesn’t
Good: light weight (easy to carry and cheap to ship), closed-cell surface that wipes clean, no latex, good cushioning for the price, and generally clean results in phthalate and PAH testing. The safety and compliance checks to run are in our TPE safety and compliance checklist.
Limits: TPE gets slippery when wet, so it’s not a hot yoga material; for that, see PU mats for hot yoga lines. It also has a shorter working life than rubber-based mats, roughly one to three years of regular use, and very cheap compounds can carry an odor when new.
If the buyer question is TPE against natural rubber specifically, our comparison of TPE vs natural rubber covers cost, MOQ and positioning. The full material picture is in the yoga mat materials comparison.
Why 6mm Is the Default
6mm sits in the middle of what a foam mat can do. Thinner TPE feels insubstantial under the knees; thicker TPE starts to feel unstable for standing poses and costs more to ship. At 6mm, the mat cushions well enough for home floors and stays firm enough for most yoga. It also photographs as “a proper mat” in a listing.
The freight side matters too. A 40HQ holds about 6,600 rolled 6mm mats at 183×61cm against about 5,000 at 8mm, by our planning figures. That difference alone often decides between the two. The full comparison across thicknesses is in our thickness guide for buyers, with weights and container counts in the yoga mat size chart.
The commonest two-SKU structure we produce is a 6mm mat with an 8mm version beside it for home and beginner customers.
Price and MOQ by Tier
| Tier | Typical spec | FOB (500 units) |
|---|---|---|
| Entry | Single-layer, ~750–800g, stock color, 1-color logo | $5–$7 |
| Standard | Double-layer two-tone, ~850–950g, strap, 1-color logo | $6–$9 |
| Premium | High-density compound, ~1.0–1.2kg, Pantone colors, laser logo or alignment lines, bag | $9–$14 |
MOQ is typically 300–500 units, and Pantone-matched colors usually need around 300 units per color because the compound is mixed in batches. Sampling takes 5–7 working days on stock tooling, and production about three to four weeks after approval. How MOQ moves with customization is covered in how MOQ shapes custom yoga mat orders, and the wider list of customization options is in our custom yoga mat OEM and ODM guide.
Writing the Brief
A complete brief for a 6mm TPE mat fits on five lines:
- Size and thickness with tolerance: 183×61cm ±1cm, 6mm ±0.3mm.
- Weight with tolerance: e.g. 900g ±50g.
- Construction and colors: double-layer, top Pantone X, bottom Pantone Y, or stock combination.
- Texture: top and bottom pattern, from the supplier’s stock options.
- Branding and packaging: logo method, size and position; strap or bag; polybag or box.
With those five lines, quotes from different suppliers describe the same mat, and the cheapest one is cheap for a reason you can see.

FAQ
How much does a 6mm TPE yoga mat weigh?
Typically 850–950g at 183×61cm for a standard double-layer mat. The full range runs from about 750g for light budget compounds to 1.2kg for dense premium ones; weight is a good indicator of density and durability.
Is a 6mm TPE yoga mat good?
For general yoga, home workouts and beginners, yes. It’s light, cushions well, contains no latex and wipes clean. It’s not suited to hot yoga, because TPE becomes slippery when wet.
What is the difference between single-layer and double-layer TPE mats?
A single-layer mat is one TPE sheet in one color, usually the budget option. A double-layer mat bonds two TPE layers, typically in two colors with different textures on each side, and is the standard retail construction.
How much does a 6mm TPE yoga mat cost wholesale?
At around 500 units, roughly $5–$7 FOB for a single-layer budget mat, $6–$9 for a standard double-layer two-tone mat with strap, and $9–$14 for a high-density premium version with custom colors and accessories.
What is the MOQ for custom 6mm TPE yoga mats?
Usually 300–500 units, with about 300 units per color for Pantone-matched colors. Stock colors and textures carry the lowest minimums.
